We meet twice a month, on the second and fourth Wednesday evenings.  At the first meeting for the month we usually have a guest speaker, who presents a 'seminar' on something photographic. The talks are usually centred about the speakers' particular experiences and talents and can range from photojournalism to wedding photography, travel photography, landscapes, macro, table top, even scrap booking. Sometimes they are tutorials in camera craft, image editing techiques or even 'how to produce an AV'. Anything is fair and they are always practical and useful as well as interesting and entertaining. They should never be missed.

The first meeting of the month is also the night members hand in their works for the current month's image competition (see Club Competitions).

In a month of five Wednesdays, the last Wed night is usually a 'prac' night, most often with hands-on how-to's in the use of studio lighting, shooting portraits, table-top photography, high-speed and slow-speed flash techniques, matte cutting, 'Photoshop' digital manipulation techniques and a miriad other possible subjects.

Sometimes we simply leave it open as a discussion night, which the members enjoy and get to have lenghty chats with an 'expert' choice. Other meetings are Q&A's sessions. Members always make themselves available for queries outside of meetings, the more experienced are always happy to help others in need.

An initiative started in 2008 is the KPS mentoring program. The more expert members are teamed with less-experienced members and act as mentor, providing them with practical 1-on-1 help and advice. Again, everything is fair game, the choices of subject, field of endeavour, time committments, etc. are by mutual agreement.

What's On This Year?

Check out our syllabus on the What's On page . This PDF document has all the dates and places of meetings, competition subjects and names of our monthly guest speakers.

Where are we?

Our venue is the Boronia West Primary School,  Tormore Road, Boronia, Victoria.

Melway reference is 64:J8

Meetings commence promptly at 8.00pm (or thereabouts) and finish dead-on somewhere between 10 and 11 pm, with a break somewhere near the middle of the evening to catch our collective breaths and grab some coffee and nibbles. As you can tell, we run a pretty tight ship.

Field Trips and Excursions

Field trips may be single day events, or weekends away, to a predetermined location, for the purpose of practising the art and craft of photography. We have visited places like Monsalvat in Eltham, Coal Creek, Healseville Sanctuary, Williamstown, Cloudhill Gardens and Teslars Tulip Farm in the Dandenong Ranges, to name a few. We have spent some wonderful weekends at places like Mt Buller, Mt Baw Baw, Cape Schank and Westernport.

We also have an annual event called the Horrie Pritchard Walk. This activity is in memory of one of KPS's founbding and respected members. We gather at a pre-selected spot, either somewhere in the Melbourne CBD or at a suburban location, as a starting point, from which we then move around or branch out, taking whetever pictures take our creative fancy. So far we have visited the Docklands area, Pollywoodside, Shrine of Rememberance, Story Hall at RMIT (north end of Swanston St), Melbourne Museum, Exhibition Building and Federation Square, which usually includes Flinders St Station, the Arts Centre and the nearby boat sheds plus Myer Music Bowl and surrounding gardens and most recently we visited an industrial site in the outer east that has some wonderfully colourful and photogenic architecture.

It is amazing how many different points of view and great photographs result from these excursions, no matter how many times we visit them.

Exhibitions

KPS members get opportunities to exhibit their works at various exhibitions throughout the year, in local libraries as well as art salons, Some members also sell their works at these exhibitions.
